Internet Connectivity

Connectivity is a business-critical service vital to the success of your company.

But because there is a wide range of different types of connection, how do you know which one is right for you?

Apogee Solutions have extensive experience with different connectivity solutions and are well placed to help you select the right product to meet your business requirements.

Below is a list of the common types of connectivity we provide:

ADSL

This type of broadband connection service provides a simple, affordable solution for a business’ connectivity requirements, offering speeds of up to 20Mb. For smaller businesses, this may provide the entire connectivity solution, but like any broadband product, it is a shared connection, so performance can vary. Also, fix times for ADSL products can be lengthy - even with the enhanced care package, BT can take up to 20 hours to clear faults.

FTTC

This is another type of broadband connection that is similar to ADSL, but uses fibre cable to deliver higher connection speeds. Again, FTTC can often provide a simple and affordable connectivity solution but can offer speeds up to 78Mb. For smaller businesses, this may provide the entire connectivity solution. However, like an ADSL connection, it can be subject to similar variations in performance and has similar fix times (see above).

EFM

Ethernet First Mile is a more recent type of internet connectivity, that was introduced to try and help bridge the gap between broadband products and lease line, the latter of which is often too costly for small businesses. Unlike broadband products, EFM has a much quicker fix SLA (less than 5 hours) and is a dedicated product, so the performance is consistent because it’s not shared with anyone else. EFM connections can typically deliver speeds of up to 35Mb. Therefore this type of connection is ideal for customers who require a higher download and upload speeds, combined with guaranteed fix time and consistent performance.

GEA

Building on the success of EFM connectivity, Generic Ethernet Access delivers similar fix times, but the connection uses fibre cable for reduced cost and potentially higher performance, such that connections can typically deliver speeds of up to 80Mb. This type of connection is ideal for customers who require a high download speed, combined with guaranteed fix time and consistent performance.

Leased Line

With a 4 hour fix SLA and speeds of up to 10Gbit, this type of fibre-based connection offers the best all round performance, and is capable of supporting even the most demanding business-critical applications. It’s commonly used in situations where significant financial damage may be caused by internet outages, or where internet performance is critical to successful business operation. Although it’s generally the most expensive type of internet connectivity, increased market competition has driven costs down, so that even for smaller businesses, it has become a more viable option.

Choosing the right type of internet connectivity is essential – get it wrong and the success of your business can be compromised.
