A red alarm clock sits on a pink background. Text reads A new Taskbar feature TO SAVE YOU TIME with colorful graphics and a stylized A logo in the corner.

“Ask Copilot” is coming to your Taskbar (but only if you want it to)

Have you ever wished your computer simply understood what you were trying to do — without making you dig through endless menus or sift through search results? Good news: Microsoft’s working on exactly that – Enter Ask Copilot.

Meet Ask Copilot

Ask Copilot is a new feature that is being tested in the latest Windows 11 preview. It takes pride of place right on your taskbar, ready to help the moment you need it.

A Smarter Version of Search

Right now, the search box on your taskbar does the basics: it finds files, apps, and settings. Nothing fancy.
Ask Copilot changes that.

That same search box now uses AI to understand what you actually mean — not just the keywords you type. It guides you straight to the right place or simply handles the job for you.

What You Can Ask It To Do

You can type things like:

  • “Open the invoice template I used last month”
  • “Connect to the projector”
  • “How do I split this PDF?”

Instead of throwing a list of options at you, Copilot can take action — opening the file, adjusting a setting, or giving you the answer instantly.

It’s still search… just a lot smarter and far more helpful.

Bonus Tools Built In

Next to the Ask Copilot box, you’ll see a couple of handy icons:

  • Copilot Vision — for understanding what’s on your screen
  • Voice commands — so you can talk to Windows instead of typing

Little touches that make life easier.

Opt-In Only (So No Surprise AI Magic)

If the idea of AI popping up everywhere feels a bit much, don’t worry — Ask Copilot is completely optional.

You can switch it on under:
Settings → Personalisation → Taskbar → Ask Copilot

If you leave it off, the standard search stays exactly as it is.

Your Data Stays Your Data

Microsoft’s clear about one thing: Ask Copilot doesn’t get extra access to your information.
It uses the same tools as regular Windows Search.
It’s not secretly scanning files or peeking at anything private.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Two words: time and focus.

Instead of your team losing minutes (or hours) hunting for documents, tweaking settings, or Googling simple tasks, Copilot just gets it done.

It’s another step toward that ideal workday where technology quietly supports your business — not slows it down.

Rolling Out Soon

Ask Copilot is still in preview, but I don’t think it’ll be long before it arrives as a general Windows update.

So, the real question is – would you switch It on?
When Ask Copilot lands, will you give it a try?
Or stick with the classic search box for now?

Either way, the choice — for the moment, at least — is yours.
